Hilbre Workshops
Part of CASS Centre for Art Science and Sustainability
Responding to these unique islands is both liberating and invigorating. The workshops form part of CASS (Centre for Art, Science and Sustainability), in association with BADA (British Art and Design Association), HCLT (Hilbre Community Land Trust), The Friends of Hilbre and the local birdwatching community, supporting the development of future projects and the long-term preservation of the islands.
As a trustee of BADA, I am delighted to bring a range of creative projects to Hilbre Island, offering guided explorations of this remarkable landscape. Participants are encouraged to slow down, observe closely and engage with the surrounding coastal environment, discovering its textures, forms and atmosphere through the use of minimal materials.

Unlock Your Creativity Amidst Nature’s Canvas
Take part in the Hilbre Art Trail – a self-guided exploration of the island that encourages visitors to slow down and engage with the surrounding flora and fauna by the paper botanist – Ling Warlow OR come into the Buoymasters Workshop, where Amanda and Terry will guide you in creating a piece of artwork that reflects your own response to this unique place.
The aim of Amanda’s workshop is to explore the concept of abstracting the natural landscape – drawing inspiration from the environment itself. She will guide you using limited materials like paper, charcoal, Indian inks and soft pastels. All together, we will consider the act of looking more closely, observing and responding to different elements of the landscape around us.

Hilbre Island Artist in Residence 2025 – Join In!
Hilbre Island
Saturday 19 July 2025 – COMPLETED
Exciting developments are underway on Hilbre, one of the three islands in the Dee Estuary archipelago.
I will be drawing and painting on-site whilst leading a unique creative drop in programme, where you can come along and create small drawings/paintings with me. These paintings (alongside my work) will be exhibited at the Buoy Master’s House, Hilbre Island on 13 and 14 September.
Please check tide times and come along when it’s safe to do so.
It’s a rare opportunity to showcase creative responses inspired by the island’s unique landscape, wildlife and history.
This initiative is made possible through a shared commitment in collaboration with BADA and the Hilbre Community Land Trust (HCLT) and is part of the Liverpool Independent Biennial 7 June – 14 September 2025.
