EDGES BEYOND

For me, painting starts with mark-making, incorporating many dualities, rough/smooth, light/dark, large/small, scratching back into the surface, all elements that help develop an interaction with time and place. I am inspired by the landscape that surrounds me, the ever changing weather patterns rolling in from the West, the mountains of Wales calling from over the Estuary, and especially the last glimpses of daylight disappearing over the edges beyond. By applying a ground of Indian orange crates a richness that only emerges when scratching back in to the surface sometimes with unexpected drying results. Each painting becomes its own unique story of the natural world.
